2013 Plenary Sessions

Keynote Address

The first plenary session of the conference occurred on Tuesday October 15, 2013. The welcome and closing remarks were given by Dr. Jamie Bartram, head of The Water Institute at UNC. Dr. Tim Mastro, Group Director of Global Health, Population and Nutrition at FHI 360, spoke regarding World Hand Washing Day. The keynote address was given by Allen Hammond, a serial entrepreneur (6 start-ups), an expert in market-based solutions to poverty, and a global leader in base of the pyramid (BOP) business strategies.

Panel Discussion

The second and final plenary session of the conference occurred on Thursday October 17, 2013. The welcome was given by Dr. Pete Kolsky, Associate Director for Teaching and Learning at The Water Institute at UNC. Dr. Jamie Bartram, Director of The Institute provided panel moderation and closing remarks.

The four panelists were:

  • Dr. Tessie San Martin, President and CEO, Plan International USA
  • Patrick Apoya, Director of the Africa Sanitation Think Tank, an Initiative of the Pan African Inter Governmental Organization, Water and Sanitation for Africa (WSA)
  • Jan Willem Rosenboom, Senior Project Officer, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Dr. Fred Muhumuza, Economic Advisor to Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development, Uganda
